Vessel Surveys in Sydney & Across Australia
Gibson Minto & Aiton has surveyed vessels in Sydney Harbour and at ports around Australia since 1883. Our surveyors are master mariners — AIMS Certified Commercial Marine Surveyors and AMSA Accredited to conduct statutory surveys for domestic commercial vessels — engaged by owners, operators, charterers, P&I Clubs and classification societies to report independently on the condition, safety and seaworthiness of ships of every class.
What our vessel surveys cover
A vessel survey is a formal, independent examination of a ship — her structure, equipment, documentation and condition — recorded at a defined moment for a defined purpose. We conduct the full range of commercial vessel surveys:
P&I Club Condition & Entry Surveys
Independent condition assessments commissioned by Protection & Indemnity Clubs before a vessel enters the Club, or periodically during membership — recording the state of hull, hatch covers, cargo gear, machinery spaces and documentation.
On Hire / Off Hire Surveys
A precise record of a vessel's condition and bunkers remaining on board at delivery onto charter and at redelivery — protecting both owner and charterer when responsibility for damage or shortages is later in question.
Australian Marine Orders Surveys
Inspection of shipboard access arrangements and equipment for compliance with the Australian Marine Orders. The firm's 1978 work for the Waterside Workers Federation formed the basis of Marine Orders Part 32.
Incident & Injury Investigation Surveys
Independent investigation of shipboard incidents and injuries — establishing the facts, the sequence of events and the contributing causes, for owners, insurers and legal advisers.
Tow Surveys
Assessment of tug, tow and towing arrangements before an ocean or coastal tow departs, with a certificate of approval suitable for underwriters.
When a vessel survey is needed
Vessel surveys are commissioned at the points where condition becomes a matter of record: when a ship enters a P&I Club; when she is delivered onto or redelivered from charter; before an ocean tow sails; after an incident or injury on board; or when a domestic commercial vessel falls due for statutory survey under the National Law.
Timing matters. An on hire survey loses its value once cargo operations have begun, and a tow approval must be in hand before departure. We attend promptly — in Sydney, often the same day.
Who commissions vessel surveys
We act for P&I Clubs and their correspondents, vessel owners and operators, charterers, classification societies, marine insurers, ship managers and legal practitioners. As an independent firm of 140 years' standing, our findings carry weight with Clubs, underwriters and the courts alike.
What the survey report covers
Every survey concludes with a formal written report: photographs, detailed condition records, bunker and equipment inventories where relevant, findings of fact and clear conclusions — prepared to the standard required for Club entry, underwriting decisions, charter party disputes and legal proceedings. Reports are issued promptly after attendance.
